There has been severe flooding in Louisiana during the month of August, 2016. When inmates learn about natural disasters, some of them become anxious. There is sometimes more anxiety than is already present from being away from home. Securus is a phone company that many jails use to allow inmates to call home. Until September 7, 2016, Securus is letting incarcerated people in Louisiana make one call a day so that they can check on their family members.
This is something that more companies should do if the facility doesn’t use Securus. It’s an act that shows that the company cares about the people who are in jail. It understands that staying in touch with family members and finding out about their well-being is important and can help keep them calm while they are incarcerated. The company plans to allow about $300,000 worth of free calls during the designated time period. Securus is also making a donation of $50,000 to the inmate welfare fund to provide further assistance to inmates. The Department of Corrections is working with Securus in order to make sure all inmates get that one phone call a day home to talk to their loved ones after the flood event.
